With such a beautiful and varied landscape, Cornwall is made for exploring – and what better way to do this than by bicycle?
Even if you haven’t brought your own bikes to this picturesque part of the world, you can easily and affordably rent bikes during your stay from Pentewan Cycle Hire.
Located a mere 4 miles from The Elms Guest House, Pentewan Cycle Hire has everything you will need to get adults and youngsters on two wheels. With mountain or hybrid bikes available for daily or weekly hire, you can also get kitted out with helmets, child seats, trailers and accessories, for a comfortable and secure ride.
Where to cycle?
This part of Cornwall is blessed with breath-taking scenery and superb cycling trails, so choosing which route to take will be your only dilemma.
One of the most popular paths starts at Pentewan Cycle Hire and winds along the Pentewan Valley towards the old market town of St Austell. Following an old railway line, the area is flat, so it’s ideal cycling territory for all the family. Forming part of the Clay Trails, due to the association of clay mining in the local area, this mainly off-road route traverses woodland and wetland, and runs parallel in part to the White River. Also known as St Austell River, this stretch of water was given the name White River by locals, as it appears white in colour as a result of waste processes from china clay quarrying. Some people also refer to it as the Red River, as a nod to tin mining activity in times gone by.
As an eco-friendly and sustainable way to visit some of the most popular Cornish tourist attractions, The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan, you can also head to the coast on an off-road trail that meanders to the quaint fishing village of Mevagissey. Follow the trail in the other direction and you can drop in to the historic port of Charlestown.
With cycling opportunities a-plenty in this scenic part of Cornwall, you will need somewhere warm and comfortable to relax and unwind. The Elms Guest House is such a welcoming retreat after a hard day’s pedalling!
